Pygmy rattlesnakes are abundant and important members of our watershed's ecology. The small, thick-bodied snakes feed mostly on mice, frogs and lizards. Pygmy rattlesnakes lure prey by wriggling their tails from a coiled hunting position, which they have been known to hold for 2-3 weeks! Their small fangs and small amounts of venom make their bites painful, but not fatal to humans. #snakes #ecology #flstateparks

Instagram post 2174141244912164078_286433866 November at the beach! Beautiful, tea-colored water flows into the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico this morning at the Western Lake outfall. Western Lake is one of our rare coastal dune lakes, freshwater lakes that open periodically to exchange water with the Gulf of Mexico. These periodic exchanges result in a wide range of salinity in the lakes, which in turn leads to dynamic floral and faunal communities. Dissolved tannins from decaying leaves cause the deep, clear amber color of the lake water. Chloe Stanley, part of our @nwfstatecollege family and student at @seasideschoolofficial, chose CBA as the beneficiary of her community service project. She gathered empty tennis ball cans that would have been discarded and upcycled them into personal fishing line recyclers. These personal bins can be used by anglers to stow fishing line, keeping it out of the environment until it can be brought to one of our many monofilament recycling stations. Fishing line can persist in the environment for over 600 years, and it often entangles marine life, leading to injury or death. CBA will use these as gifts and prizes to raise awareness at the many outreach events that we attend. Chloe is a champion for our waterways. This year, in addition to working with CBA education and restoration programs, our AmeriCorps @nwf_environmental_stewards members are providing ecosystem support for our partners at Eglin AFB Natural Resources Branch (Jackson Guard).
