Bayou life! Check out this pine tree at our living Bayou life!
Check out this pine tree at our living shoreline at Cessna Park on Hogtown Bayou. When we started our project there, this tree's roots were exposed and it was in danger of toppling. We rebuilt the shoreline through our oyster reef breakwaters and saltmarsh plants planted by Grasses in Classes students. Now the tree is a thriving part of life on the bayou! Happy International Women and Girls in Science Day!

We wanted to recognize the women watershed warriors that work hard every day to protect and restore Choctawhatchee Bay and its watershed. These scientists work hard conducting water quality monitoring, living shoreline restoration, fish and wildlife conservation, and outreach and education. Thank you for everything you do! #womeninscience #choctawhatcheebay #stem

Feeling grateful this morning! Have y'all seen ou Feeling grateful this morning!
Have y'all seen our new truck, van and trailer yet? CBA desperately needed new vehicles for years, so that we could continue to provide services to our community and grow our programs. The women of @impactnwf saw our need and awarded CBA a grant to purchase new vehicles at the end of 2019. The new truck and trailer, along with new, wheeled recycling bins have allowed us to transform our oyster shell recycling program. We have already exceeded our 2020 goal of collecting 75 tons of oyster shell by over 30 tons!!!
Stay tuned for more posts on news from our oyster recycling program, along with info on how the van is helping us with education and seagrass restoration. If you want to be like the women of @impactnwf and help CBA sustain swimmable, fishable, livable waterways, join now at the link in the bio.

We are seeing a range of weather today on Okaloosa Island. Okaloosa Island is the local name for Santa Rosa Island, the forty mile-long barrier island that stretches from Pensacola to Destin. Barrier Islands are important coastal habitat. CBA's Dunes in Schools program teaches kids about barrier islands and dune lakes and gives them a direct role in restoration of dunes by planting native dune vegetation. Help support these programs by donating at the link in the bio.

Gonna get to work! CBA and @nwf_environmental_stew Gonna get to work!
CBA and @nwf_environmental_stewards have a lot of work to do today, so we are starting off with a quickness. We'll be training in macroinvertebrate collection and identification with @usfws, prepping for water quality and red tide monitoring, developing seagrass lessons for high school students, entering tons of seagrass and water quality data, calibrating equipment, writing grants, planning future initiatives, and assembling teams of volunteers. That's just one day of the work we do for our watershed. Join us at the link in the bio and find out how you can help us keep our waterways swimmable and fishable now and into the future.

🙌 for hands- on science education! Although it' 🙌 for hands- on science education!
Although it's been challenging, CBA Education Coordinator Amanda and our @nwf_environmental_stewards are still delivering engaging science lessons to our Grasses in Classes students. Through a combination of video and zoom lessons, teacher collaboration, and monthly "lesson in a box" drops to all the schools, we are innovating and adapting the way we foster the next generation of water stewards by sparking wonder in young minds.
In February, students will construct a model of an oyster's anatomy and learn about all of the ecosystem services oysters provide to Choctawhatchee Bay.

#boglife Here's an upclose look at pitcher plant #boglife
Here's an upclose look at pitcher plant feeding adaptations. Pitcher plants like these Burke's southern pitcher plants, have distinctive adaptations for living in nutrient-poor soil. These carnivorous plants produce a pitcher-shaped structure that collects rainwater and dew. The plants' nectar attracts insects, who slide into the funnel-shaped pitcher and drown in the pool of water collected there. The plant then dissolves the insect and uses it for food.
Pitcher plants and the ecosystems that support them are an important part of our watershed. Let's take care of our backyard! Join CBA at the link in the bio.
