A nice little shark!
This small shark was spotted by one of our citizen scientists near their dock on Choctawhatchee Bay. It is most likely a bull shark or sandbar shark, but it is hard to get a definitive identification from this angle. The bay is home to humans aaaand wildlife that thrive on healthy waterways. Our citizen scientists monitor 134 stations each month to collect water quality data that is used to learn about and manage our local waterways. Basin Creek has origins in Eglin AFB Reservation in Walton County. It flows through mixed hardwood forests into Basin Bayou, which then opens into Choctawhatchee Bay at Hwy. 20, in the community of Basin Bayou.

Woody goldenrod is one of the last wildflowers of fall, and it is still abundant in our watershed. Woody goldenrod is allelopathic, which means that it produces its own herbicide that it leaches into the soil to help it outcompete other plants. This is a survival strategy that the goldenrod family shares with oaks and magnolias, to name a few. The more you know....🌼🐝

@nwf_environmental_stewards spent some time processing the monofilament that CBA has collected from our monofilament recycling program. After everything except for monofilament fishing line has been removed, the line will be sent to @berkleyfishing for recycling, where it will ne used to make things like tackle boxes and carpet. We need volunteers! Our Education Coordinator, Am

We need volunteers! Our Education Coordinator, Amanda, and our @nwf_environmental_stewards are overwhelmed with smooth cordgrass that need splitting and repotting. These plants are used in restoration projects around the Choctawhatchee Bay to create habitat, reduce erosion and filter pollution from stormwater runoff. Anyone who helps turn one tray of plants into two trays will receive a free membership for the year.

The plant life!
Soooo, CBA and @nwf_environmental_stewards and some awesome volunteers have spent a LOT of time and energy on our smooth cordgrass plants lately. Left with a huge surplus of plants after our Grasses in Classes field trips were Covid-cancelled at the end of last school year, we have been working overtime to split and repot these plants as they flourish and outgrow their present pots. These thousands of plants will eventually restore saltmarsh habitat all around the #choctawhatcheebay.
