So much shell!🦪🦪
Even with fewer people in town, our oyster shell recycling program is going strong! We collected 26 30 gallon bins from our partner restaurants this past Monday. We will add this shell to the well over 200 tons we have collected so far this year, which will be used to restore oyster habitat in Choctawhatchee Bay. We've got some cool projects coming up, so stay tuned!

CBA Director Alison and Monitoring Program Manager

CBA Director Alison and Monitoring Program Manager Jenna recently traveled all the way to the Alabama state line to check out a homeowner property with two creeks and a spring that flows into the Pea River. We are evaluating freshwater sites like these to add to our Monitoring Program to increase our knowledge of the upper portions of our watershed. After all, water flows to the lowest point, and what's upstream affects the downstream waterbodies like Choctawhatchee Bay. The Pea River flows into the Choctawhatchee River, which is the major freshwater source for our brackish water bay. We are all connected by our waterways, so let's take care of them!
Thanks to the gracious property owner for inviting us to explore, and thanks to the @jwcfoundation for helping fund this freshwater expansion!

Program Manager Amanda learns how to monitor local dune ecosystems for the Gulf Coast Solitary Bee and its host plant Coastalplain Honeycombhead in a neat new citizen science project with the University of Florida.

🌊It's the most wonderful time of the year...National Estuaries Week that is!🌊

We kicked it off this past weekend with the International Coastal Cleanup and the Choctawhatchee Bay Estuary Program's Family Fun-Fest.

CBA and City of Destin staff and 40+ volunteers cleaned up over 150 pounds of marine debris at Norriego Point, while fun-fest participants learned about how to care for our estuary with our oyster gardening program on Okaloosa Island.

As we were enjoying our lunchbreak while building living shorelines at Live Oak Point, this buckeye was enjoying these boneset flowers. Both boneset and buckeyes are native Floridians who are at home in the saltmarsh.

So many smooth cordgrasses! Smooth cordgrass, or S

So many smooth cordgrasses!
Smooth cordgrass, or Spartina alterniflora is an essential part of a healthy Choctawhatchee Bay. It provides habitat, erosion control, and it filters pollutants!
Although smooth cordgrass is sometimes incorrectly called "seagrass," it is not. This champion marsh plant grows along the shoreline in the intertidal zone and it is never completely submerged, so it's known as an "emergent grass" 🤓.
CBA grows smooth corgrass in our Grasses in Classes school program. In Grasses in Classes, kids take care of the smooth cordgrass, then help plant them at restoration sites.
Here, our Education Manager, Amanda, is checking on the grasses at Silver Sands School. They look pretty awesome!

Our Ecology Technician, Kayla shows us how to build oyster reef breakwaters at a recent homeowner living shoreline build.
This reef is built of limestone rock. We also use oyster shell collected from our oyster shell recycling program and other natural materials to create breakwaters like these that provide surfaces for oysters to settle and thrive, while guarding the shoreline from erosion. In addition to oysters, the breakwater provide habitat for all sorts of fish and crabs! Eventually, we will add native saltmarsh plants behind the reef to complete the living shoreline.

Oyster reefs are not just for oysters!
This juvenile tripletail is enjoying the oyster reefs at one of our homeowner living shorelines. Lying on their sides on the surface near structures and tide lines, and mottled from yellow to dark gray, juvenile tripletails resemble floating leaves. When approached, they take off like a shot! Our watershed is wondrous; help us take care of it by joining our community of water stewards at basinalliance.org.

Since one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, we at CBA are so excited that you chose oyster gardening to help our bay as part of your educational experience. Our Live Oak Point living shoreline is shaping up! We are working hard with our project team every day to create salt marsh and oyster reef breakwaters that will protect Choctawhatchee Bay's largest salt marsh from erosion. This #greeninfrastructure also provides great fish habitat and water filtration. Thanks to our partners at @nwfwmd for bring us in on this important project!
