This is how happy we are about our new oyster shel

This is how happy we are about our new oyster shell recycling bins!
A big thank you to Islanders Coastal Outfitter for gifting CBA with one percent of their profits through the 1% for the Planet
Program. Islanders generous gift allowed us to buy extra bins to accommodate our growing oyster shell recycling program. These shells will be used to create oyster habitat at Liza Jackson Park in Fort Walton Beach.
Shop at Islanders and help give back to the local environment!

Let the countdown begin! International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is an event where communities across the globe will join together to pick up and record marine debris along our shorelines and waterways, improving the health of our oceans while aiding in research that is important for conservation.

Join us at Mattie Kelly Park and Joe's Bayou Boat Ramp or at Norriego Point in Destin. We sure hope to see you out there with your reusable water bottles, garden gloves, and bucket in hand! 🐟🌾🐬🦐♻ #ICC

We were able to check out all your suggestions for naming our animal ambassadors, and after much deliberation, we decided on Mac and Temmi, suggested by Laura Tiu. Mac and Temmi are in homage to their species' scientific nomenclature, Macrochelys temminckii. As you can see, Mac always has something to say and Temmi is a little bit shy. We are happy to have these two little mud angels on board. Thank you all for the great suggestions!

Please note that alligator snapping turtles are a State Species of Special Concern in Florida with an IUCN status of vulnerable. Presently, under Rule 68A-27.005 of the Florida Administrative Code, it is illegal to take, possess, or sell the alligator snapping turtle, as it is a protected species. The CBA has, in possession, the proper licenses issued by the State of Florida to house these animal ambassadors in captivity for educational purposes.

A measure of success! Restoration Program Manager Rachel and Monitoring Program Manager Jenna measure our day's work at Live Oak Point as an afternoon storm rolls in. CBA is working with the Northwest Florida Water Management District to restore and protect eroded shoreline at Live Oak Point, the largest intact saltmarsh on Choctawhatchee Bay, and a vital habitat for native birds, fish and invertebrates.

Last week CBA staff welcomed our new partnering group of AmeriCorps NWF Environmental Stewards to our watershed. Part of our day was spent talking about who we are as people and as an organization. We also had a lot of fun teaching and learning about a small portion of our watershed by doing a nature hike scavenger hunt, kayaking and catching critters with several different kinds of nets.

Thank you to Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park for providing us with our beautiful location and to UF IFAS Walton County Extension for providing the kayaks.

CBA recently began working on our biggest living s

CBA recently began working on our biggest living shoreline restoration project which will be over 5,000 feet once complete! The oyster reef breakwaters at Live Oak Point will protect a sizeable portion of the Choctawhatchee Bay's largest continuous saltmarsh. We will be building breakwaters out of limestone to protect the existing marsh from erosion and planting native grasses to restore the eroded marsh areas.

Snapshot from Santa Rosa Sound! That’s right, we find oysters growing on all kinds of things, such as marine debris items like this discarded sand toy! Our estuary (Choctawhatchee Bay) is what we call “spat limited.” This means oyster spat does not have enough preferred surfaces to land and grow on. Did you know CBA has a unique solution to this issue? Check out our Oyster Gardening program to learn more about how you can grow oysters in our bay today!

Big Thanks to the City of Fort Walton Beach for our new recycled oyster shell staging site in preparation for the Liza Jackson Park living shoreline project. Our partnership between the @cityoffwb, @MyFWC, @toadfishoutfitters, @CCAFL, UF Pros, @NWFWater, @IslandersCoastalOutfitter, and @oc.decf will enhance the shoreline of the beloved Liza Jackson Park. The CBA plans to begin this project in Fall 2021!

Last week we were excited to work with our friends

Last week we were excited to work with our friends at @floridaseagrant and the UF IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station to conduct pre-construction monitoring at our future living shoreline site at Liza Jackson Park. In addition to limestone oyster reef breakwaters, this site will act as a test site for a new plastic-free oyster reef material they are calling prisms. Stay tuned to hear more about the project as we get closer to building the reefs!

The @GulfPowerCompany Foundation has been partnering and investing in communities throughout Northwest Florida. We recently met with Bernard H. Johnson, Jr., Gulf Power’s regional external affairs manager, to receive a $10,000 gift given to the CBA education program. With donors such as Gulf Power Foundation, we can reach students from all around the watershed and foster a new generation of environmental stewards. We are grateful to waterway champions such as Gulf Power!

Grasses in Classes is a hands-on, environmental ed

Grasses in Classes is a hands-on, environmental education program giving students in Okaloosa and Walton Counties a direct role in restoring Choctawhatchee Bay shorelines.

Grasses in Classes students tend salt marsh nurseries throughout the school year and receive monthly education on local estuarine topics that meet Florida’s state science standards from CBA and CBA partners.
