Nature sights and sounds, plus the #soundoffreedom! Here's a shot of our Florida Park Grasses in Classes site showing where some of the grasses have spread out beyond where we planted them (good news!). There's also peaceful waves, a hermit crab occupying a moon snail shell and some oysters growing on the concrete rubble; and, since we are in Valparaiso, there's the familiar sound of aircraft from @eglinafb.

So many flowering trees in our watershed right now!
Yesterday, we explored Moccasin Creek on the Alaqua Section of the @floridatrail, a beautifully unique area of the Choctawhatchee watershed that's easily-accessed thanks to trail maintenance and building by volunteers. The Mountain Laurel is breathtaking! In northwest Florida, we are in the very southern reaches of the plant's range. We don't have the rocky slopes here that they prefer, but, luckily for us, they thrive on shady slopes next to spring-fed water, which we DO have in abundance. #getoutdoors and check it out!

Hey there! All of our Spring Break volunteer events are cancelled and we are following developing guidelines for #socialdistancing, so these are photos that we love that haven't made it to #IG yet.
.
One way we love to educate the public is with observation tanks. These allow people of all ages to see up close some of the animals that we are trying to protect. Two of the critters you might find in one of our observation tanks are the Eastern Oyster and the Gulf Pipefish. .
Oysters cluster on hard surfaces including their own shells. These clusters can fuse together forming oyster reefs that provide habitat for many marine animals such as barnacles, muscles, crabs and fish. .
The pipefish has a long slender body that helps them blend in with the seagrass they live in. Does that tubular snout look familiar? That's because pipefish are cousins to the sea horse!

A big CBA thanks to the @chamberofwalton Leadership Walton class for choosing CBA's Grasses in Classes program as their group's charity beneficiary. The Sip 'n Paint fundraiser held on Sunday at @sunsetbaycafe in @sandestin was a super-fun event, where we painted oysters (of course)!

This native azalea is in bloom right now and can be found along the native plant trail at our HQ at the South Walton Center of @nwfstatecollege. We are currently at work with @nwf_environmental_stewards and spring break volunteers to revitalize the native plant trail and our native plant garden. A different view of Western Lake! Western Lake, one of Walton County's rare coastal dune lakes, is often photographed and it's Gulfside treeline has become an iconic representation of our area. This photo is taken from the @graytonbeachstatepark trail on the north side of the lake. This side of the lake is less salty due to distance from the lake's Gulf outfall
You can see the predominant plants here, like spatterdock and sawgrass, are adapted to freshwater. CBA and our partners at Mattie Kelly Environmental Institute are doing monitoring and research on our dune lakes to help our community make good management decisions.
