When it comes to plants, we never rest. Today, we got help potting 400 black needlerush plants from @ufifas_solutions 4H Marine Camp kids at @4hcamptimpoochee. These building blocks of a better bay will provide habitat, slow erosion and filter pollution.
Find out how you can help us take care of native plants at basinalliance.org.

Exciting news from our terrapin research team! One Exciting news from our terrapin research team! One of our awesome citizen scientist volunteers found this adult male diamondback terrapin earlier this week. Terrapins are the only brackish water turtle in North America. With that said, we believe they are a great ambassador for our estuary! 🐢🐢🐢

Our lead US Geological Surveys project partners met up with our volunteer, CBA Program Manager Jenna and several of our AmeriCorps members, where they conducted a full health assessment on the individual. There is very little known about diamondback terrapins here in the Florida panhandle, so our team and partners are working diligently to learn more about local populations. Terrapin populations across the state are threatened by things like habitat loss, crab traps, and harvest for the pet trade.

We here at CBA are committed to protecting our waterways and all the life it supports! Learn more about terrapins and what we can do to protect them at https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/reptiles/freshwater-turtles/diamondback-terrapin/.
Whew! It's hot out there and only getting hotter. Whew! It's hot out there and only getting hotter. 🔥🔥☀️
Cool off in one of our watershed's many beautiful creeks. Most of our local creeks maintain a brisk 73-76 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. That sounds so good right now!

This is Ten-mile Creek, which flows into Juniper Creek, which joins Turkey Creek, which spills into Boggy Bayou, which opens into Choctawhatchee Bay! We are all connected by our waterways. Go to the link in the bio to find out how you can help take care of them.

We got out and about early this morning to do site We got out and about early this morning to do site visits on Santa Rosa Island, and it was totally worth it!
Santa Rosa Island (known locally as Okaloosa Island) is a barrier island that stretches over 40 miles from Fort Pickens to Destin, FL. Much of it is undisturbed, which is great, because it provides unique habitat for wildife, as well as protection from storms for the mainland. This sandhill milkweed is just one of the special plants adapted to survive in the harsh barrier island conditions.
We 💙 💚 our watershed.
You can respect our barrier island by staying out of protected areas and staying off the dunes!

Today, we remember and honor men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
Lake Powell, our largest coastal dune lake, is ope Lake Powell, our largest coastal dune lake, is open to the Gulf this Memorial Day weekend! Get out to @camphelenstatepark and see for yourself!
Coastal dune lakes are rare worldwide, but we are lucky enough to have 15 of them here in Walton County. Dune lakes are freshwater in origin, but because they open periodically and exchange water with the Gulf of Mexico, they have a wide range of salinity. The result is a dynamic, brackish habitat that provides shelter for all sorts of plants and animals, as well as passive and active recreation opportunities for humans.
Learn more about dune lakes and the work that CBA and partners like Walton County and @mattiekellyenvironmental are doing to learn about and care for these treasures at the link in the bio. To learn more about volunteer opportunities on the lakes, email cba@nwfsc.edu.

Spotlight on @boathouseoysterbar! The Boathouse O Spotlight on @boathouseoysterbar!
The Boathouse Oyster Bar is legendary in this part of the world, so we are over the moon to have them aboard as one of our oyster shell recycling partners!
We stop here three times a week to pick up shucked oyster shell that we use to build oyster habitat in Choctawhatchee Bay.
So, dine at The Boathouse Oyster Bar, eat oysters and help the bay!
