In Our Classrooms
Grasses in Classes
Grasses in Classes is a hands-on environmental education program where students grow native shoreline grasses at school, learn about estuarine ecosystems through monthly lessons, and then plant their grasses at a Choctawhatchee Bay restoration site to help rebuild salt marsh habitat, foster stewardship, and support shoreline protection.
Dunes in Schools
Dunes in Schools is a middle school professional development and student engagement program that helps teachers bring lessons about rare coastal dune lakes and barrier island ecosystems into the classroom. Through hands-on science activities tied to Florida’s standards, students explore dynamic coastal systems and learn how native plants like sea oats support these unique habitats, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship.
Shoals
SHOALS (Students Helping Oysters & Living Shorelines) is a hands-on aquaculture and environmental education program for high school students that teaches about living shoreline ecology and estuarine habitats through in-class and field activities. Participants help with reef construction and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) planting that support habitat restoration in Choctawhatchee Bay, while educators receive training to implement related lessons in their schools.
From Shelves to the Shores
From Shelves to the Shores is a free, hands-on science outreach program where Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance educators visit community libraries to teach people of all ages about the local watershed through engaging activities and interactive learning experiences.
