Choctawhatchee Bay
Learn about the Choctawhatchee Bay — a 30-mile estuary at the heart of the watershed that connects to the Gulf and supports recreation, wildlife, and rare species. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance works here on water quality and seagrass monitoring, living shoreline and reef breakwater restoration using recycled oyster shell, and education with student projects like Grasses in Classes.
Choctawhatchee River
Learn about the Choctawhatchee River — a roughly 140-mile freshwater system flowing from its headwaters in Alabama to Choctawhatchee Bay in Florida that provides most of the bay’s freshwater and supports diverse wildlife, including threatened species and abundant native fish and riparian habitats. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance works here to monitor water quality, support research such as Gulf sturgeon habitat evaluation, address environmental challenges like pollution and sedimentation, and promote stewardship.
Coastal Dune Lakes
Learn about the rare coastal dune lakes along Florida’s Gulf Coast—shallow, dynamic water bodies that sit behind dunes and intermittently exchange fresh and saltwater with the Gulf.
